The Basics of Electronic Mail

cc and bcc

Much like interoffice memos, many email programs allow you to create "carbon copies" of your message. Using "cc" allows the original recipient and everyone who is copied to see who has been copied. Using "bcc," or "blind copy," means that the copied person's name is hidden from the recipient(s). Copies are one of the main sources of email "litter" on the information highway. Be sure that the people you are copying really need to receive this message. For example, all the members of a project team don't need to follow the details of every e-conversation that takes place between individuals in the group. And be aware that using blind copies is like whispering behind someone's back … avoid this essentially impolite practice.
