The Basics of Electronic Mail

How to read an email address

The first half of an email address represents the sender's name or "handle." The information after the "@" sign is like the "street address" on an envelope. The final three letters of the address indicate the Internet domain category:
.com = commercial business
.edu = educational institutions
.org = nonprofit organizations
.net = networks
.mil = military
.gov = government entities

Important note regarding web site addresses: When you are including a web site reference in an email, be sure to include the full address, starting with http://… Many email programs will allow the recipient to go directly to the website by clicking on the embedded web address. However, without the http://, the address may not be recognized.
