Fireworks

The History Panel is effectively Fireworks Undo manager. Many applications or programs feature multiple levels of Undo, meaning you can discard or erase a series of modifications or changes you have made. For instance, in a Word Processor you can repeatedly {Click} the Undo button until you’re left without any content at all after having keyed in a few paragraphs. Similarly in Fireworks, you can use the History Panel to undo a series of modifications you have made to an image.

Use your Toolbox to create a rectangle or make a selection on the "diana.png" image and watch the History Panel as you place and edit content in your Document Window.  You will notice that every single step of your creation process is referenced in the History Panel with an Icon and a Label.   On the left hand side of the History Panel you will find a gray bar with a small slider attached to it.  This slider is known as the Undo Marker.

You can quickly undo anything you have done by sliding the Undo Marker up the gray bar until you have grayed out all of the steps that you want to undo.

Once you’ve made the selections you {Click} on the Pop Out menu button at the top left hand corner of the History Panel and select "Save as Command" from the list. A dialog box will appear prompting you to input a name for your command. Input the name and {Click} OK to close the dialog box.   Select "Commands" from the Menu and you will find your custom command listed there. It is now a part of the Fireworks Command list and can be used on any document you create with the program. You can delete or change the name of a Command by selecting "Commands/Edit Command List" from the Menu. You will be presented with a dialog box that allows you to select individual commands from a list that can then be deleted or renamed.

There is one limitation of the History Panel that must be kept in mind when you are replaying steps or creating Commands. You may find that some of the steps in your History Panel have a red "x" next to their respective icon. The red "x" indicates that a step contains information that cannot be recorded by the Fireworks History Panel. A good example of material that cannot be recorded is the positioning and coordinate information that the painting and drawing tools create when you use them.

Experiment with the History Panel by creating new material in a new document or augment an already existing one. Try undoing, replaying and creating commands.
