Backing Up a Disk

Backing up a disk is making a copy of the information on the disk to be stored in place different from the original.

When would I back up a disk?

Back up information on a floppy disk, CD-ROM or on a hard disk drive as a protection against loss or damage to the original data. Occasionally, hardware stops working properly. Programs and documents can become corrupted, meaning they are no longer usable or accessible. In addition to hardware and software failures, people sometimes unintentionally delete files. When any of these catastrophes occur, use a previous "backup" version to restore your work or application software.

It is usually a good idea to store at least two copies of your work – one on the computer hard disk and another on portable media, such as floppy disks, CD-ROM, or backup tapes.

How do I back up a disk?

Back up files either by making copies using Windows Explorer or using a backup program. Microsoft Backup is a program included with Windows 98.

Backup files by making copies:
1.     Open two Windows Explorer windows so that the files or folders you would like to         back up are both visible on the screen.
2.     While pressing the Ctrl key on the keyboard, drag the files or folders to be backed up         onto the new folder or floppy disk icon. The Ctrl key causes the files to be copied,         rather than moved.
