Highlighting

Highlighting is the act of selecting items on the screen. When items and text are selected, their appearance changes.

When do I highlight?

Highlight items or text when you want to cut, copy, move, or delete them. You can also perform other operations on highlighted data

IMPORTANT: Typing when text is highlighted REPLACES the highlighted text.

How do I highlight?

Highlight text with the mouse:

1.     Move the mouse pointer to the beginning of the text to highlight.

2.     Press and hold the LEFT mouse button.

3.     While holding the mouse button, slide the mouse pointer along the text to highlight it.

4.     Release the mouse button to stop highlighting.

5.     Click anywhere else in the window (or use the arrow keys on the keyboard) to         remove the highlighting, leaving the items unchanged.

Highlight text with the keyboard:

1.     Click a point in the text to position the cursor.

2.     Press and hold the "Shift" key on the keyboard.

3.     Use the arrow key to advance the highlighting across the text.

4.     Press and hold "Ctrl+Shift" on the keyboard when using the arrow keys to advance        the highlighting one word at a time.

5.     Release the "Shift" key to stop highlighting

Highlight items in Windows Explorer or on the desktop:

1.     Start Windows Explorer.

2.     Click a file or folder to highlight it.

3.     Press and hold the "Ctrl" key when clicking to select multiple files.

4.     Press and hold the "Shift" key when clicking to select a file and all files between the        file and another previously highlighted file.

Highlight groups of items with a box:

1.     Press and hold the LEFT mouse button in an empty space in Windows Explorer or on         the desktop

2.     While holding the mouse button, slide the mouse diagonally to create a stretch-box         around icons. The items become highlighted as you slide the mouse.

3.     Release the mouse button to stop highlighting.

4.     Click anywhere else in the window to remove the highlighting, leaving the items         unchanged
