Windows95/98

Installing and Removing Programs

Usually software programs come with their own installation (set-up) programs, and sometimes with programs to uninstall, or remove the software. Windows 95 and Windows 98 also provide an interface program to install and remove software on your computer.

When would I install or remove programs?

Install programs when you want to add new programs or upgrade existing software to a newer version. The installation places files in their correct folders, starts any required drivers, and creates shortcuts.

Remove programs no longer needed, or when you need to clear some disk space. Some programs recommend removal of previous versions before upgrading to a new version.

How do I install and remove programs?

Install a program on your computer:

1.     Click the "Start" menu, "Settings," then "Control Panel."

2.     Double-click the "Add/Remove Programs" icon in the Control Panel window.

3.     Click the "Install/Uninstall" tab at the top of the window

4.     Click "Install…" at the top of the tab

5.     Follow the instructions, clicking "Next" in each window to complete the installation.

6.     Click "OK" to close the window

Using Windows to remove files also stops drivers and removes shortcuts and other files automatically created during the installation. Before removing a program from the computer, be aware of the following cautions:

1.     After removing or deleting a program, you may no longer be able to open files created         with that program.

2.     Occasionally "Add/Remove Programs" warns that it is about to delete shared files.         Some programs use system files that are also used by other programs. Click "No" to         indicate you do NOT want to delete shared files to be safe.

Remove a program from your computer:

1.     Click the "Start" menu, "Settings," then "Control Panel."

2.     Double-click the "Add/Remove Programs" icon in the Control Panel window.

3.     Click the "Install/Uninstall" tab at the top of the window.

4.     Click a program name in the box at the bottom of the window.

5.     Click "Add/Remove…."

6.     Follow the instructions, clicking "Next" in each window to complete the installation.         Use the "Add/Remove…" button to remove a program, selected components of a         program, or to modify installed components.

7.     Click "OK."
