Deleting Files, Folders, Programs, and Icons

Deleting files, folders, programs, and icons is the process of removing them from your computer.

When would I delete files, folders, programs, and icons?

Delete items when you no longer need them or want them on the computer.

Delete items and empty the Recycle Bin if you are running low on disk space. Items stored in the Recycle Bin still occupy disk space

How do I delete files, folders, programs, and icons?

Deleting items places them in the Recycle Bin temporary storage. Items remain in the Recycle Bin until it is emptied. You can change the Recycle Bin properties so items are permanently deleted if you do not want to worry about "taking out the trash."

Remove items to the Recycle Bin:

1.     Click an item on the desktop or in a folder using Windows Explorer

2.     Press "Delete" on the keyboard.

3.     Click "Yes" if a message box appears asking you to confirm you want to delete the         item

Remove an item using the shortcut menu:

1.     RIGHT-click an item on the desktop or in a folder using Windows Explorer.

2.     Click "Delete" on the menu that appears.

3.     Click "Yes" if a message box appears asking you to confirm you want to move the         item(s) to the Recycle Bin

Emptying the Recycle Bin:

1.     Right-click "Recycle Bin" on the desktop.

2.     Click "Empty Recycle Bin" on the menu that appears

3.     Click "Yes" if a message box appears asking you to confirm you want to delete the         item.

When deleting programs, it is also important to delete extra files associated with the program, such as drivers and shortcuts. Windows tools are available to delete programs along with any peripheral or supporting files and programs. Please refer to the "Control Panel: Installing and Removing Programs" section

Deleting programs:

1.     Click the "Start" menu, and then click "Settings" and "Control Panel" on the sub-menus         that appear

2.     Click "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel window

3.     Click the "Install/Uninstall" tab at the top of the window.

4.     Click the name of a program listed in the box displayed.

5.     Click "Add/Remove…."

6.     Click "Automatic" in the Select Uninstall Method window that appears.

7.     Follow the instructions and click "Next" to proceed in each window.

8.     Click "OK" when removal is completed.
