Copying and Moving Files

Windows Explorer provides simple methods for duplicating files and transferring files to different locations.

How do I copy and move files within Windows Explorer?

Copy and move files within a single Windows Explorer window or from one window to another. Files can be moved and copied on the same disk, or to a different disk (including floppy disks.)

Drag and drop using Shift (move) and Ctrl (copy) on the keyboard or both together to create a shortcut.

Drag and drop an icon (LEFT mouse button):

1.     Place the cursor (mouse pointer) over the icon.

2.     Press the LEFT mouse button, but do not release it

3.     While holding the mouse button, move the mouse. The selected icon follows the         mouse motion.

4.     When the icon is positioned in the desired location – in another window or on another         icon – release the mouse button.

COPY a file:

1.     While pressing the Ctrl key …

2.     …Drag and drop an icon.

MOVE a file:

1.     While pressing the Shift key …

2.     …Drag and drop an icon.

Drag and drop using the RIGHT mouse button to use a shortcut menu.

Click items and "Copy" with the Edit menu. Then click on another folder, and "Paste" or "Paste Shortcut."

COPY a file using the pull-down menu:

1.     Click a folder or file icon in Windows Explorer.

2.     Click the "Edit" menu, then "Copy."

3.     In the same or a different folder, click the "Edit" menu again, then "Paste."
