Windows Explorer, My Computer, and File Manager

Windows Explorer is the program used for managing the files on your computer. It is similar to File Manager from Windows 3.1, but it also shows all drive connections.

Window Explorer displays the entire contents of you computer in a tree-like structure. "My Computer" displays only the contents of a single folder in the window.

When would I use Windows Explorer

Use Windows Explorer to:

1.     View your files in various sort orders

2.     Launch programs and open files.

3.     Copy and move files

4.     Copy files to floppy disk, or from one disk to another.

How do I use Windows Explorer?

Start Windows Explorer by clicking "Start menu / Programs / Windows Explorer."

Change the way folders are displayed using the View menu.

View folders in Windows Explorer:

1.     View the entire computer contents in the Explorer Bar in the left pane.

2.     Click a folder or drive in the LEFT pane to view its contents in the RIGHT pane.

3.     Click "+" in the left pane to expand a folder or disk to view its contents as a         tree-like structure. (Double-click a folder to do the same.)

4.     Click "-" in the left pane to collapse a folder, hiding its contents.

Display the full path in the title bar:

1.     Click the "View" menu, and then "Folder Options" (Windows 98) or "Options"         (Windows 95).

2.     Click the "View" tab.

3.     Click the checkbox by "Display full path in title bar."

Copy a disk:

1.     Click on a disk drive in My Computer or in the RIGHT pane of Windows Explorer.

2.     Click the "File" menu, and then "Copy Disk."

3.     Select source and destination disk drives

4.     Click "Start." (Note that anything on the destination disk will be deleted.)

5.     If you are copy disks using a single drive, the Copy Disk program indicates when         to switch disks. Click "OK" when it asks.

6.     Click "Close."

Open each "My Computer" folder in its own window: (Windows 98)

1.     Click the "View" menu, and then "Folder Options."

2.     Click the "General" tab.

3.     Click the button by the bottom option.

4.     Click "Settings."

5.     Click the button by "Open each folder in the same window" in the second group         of options ("Browse folders as follows").

6.     Click "OK" in the Custom Settings window.

7.     Click "OK" in the Folder Options window.

Open each "My Computer" folder in its own window: (Windows 95)

1.     Click the "View" menu, and then "Options."

2.     Click the "Folder" tab.

3.     Click the button by the bottom option.

4.     Click "OK."
