Creating a Drop Cap

WORD enables you to create a drop cap to enhance the look of a paragraph. A drop cap is a large sized letter, word or text. Normally, the drop cap applies to the first letter of a paragraph.

To create a drop cap, follow these steps:

Select the Drop Cap... option in the Format menu. The following dialogue box will appear:

In the Position box, select the location in which to insert the drop cap. There are three choices: no drop cap; in the text aligned at the left margin; or in the left margin (text moved to the right).

In the Font box, select the character font you want for the drop cap.

In the Lines to Drop box, indicate the height of the drop cap. For example, if you choose 3, the height of your drop cap will be equivalent to three lines.

In the Distance from Text box, specify the distance between the drop cap and the text.

Exercise 4

Make the following changes to the ACADIA 1 document:

  • Move the cursor to the end of the second paragraph and insert a blank line to create a new paragraph.

  • Insert tabs at 3.2 cm (centre alignment) and at 6.7 cm (right alignment).

  • Type the three following columns of text, using the tabs you have set (the first column will begin at the left margin):

    Duration Boats Crew

    30 days 3 250 24 days 4 350 70 days 6 500
  • The first paragraph should have a line spacing of 1.5.

  • Create a drop cap for the first letter of the second paragraph. It should be in Arial Black character font and should be two lines high.

  • Indent the first paragraph (one tab).

After these changes, your text should look like this:

We owe the toponym Acadia to a Florentine who served the king of France and who died somewhere in the Caribbean, eaten by cannibals...

Giovanni da Verrazzano was the first European to navigate and explore the North American coast from Florida to Newfoundland. At least, he was the first to have left us an original account of his discoveries.

Duration Boats Crew

30 days 3 250 24 days 4 350 70 days 6 500
